Cemetery

Ringwood Cemetery is set in a beautiful, peaceful site, enhanced by mature trees, shrubs and hedges, in Hightown Road. Ringwood Town Council is the Burial Authority, with responsibility for maintenance and administration.

The Old Part of the Cemetery opened in 1864; records show the first interment was in this year. It is approximately 7 acres in size, with 6,000 grave spaces and a Garden of Rest. The Chapel and Bell Tower were demolished in 1960.

The Cemetery was extended in the early part of the 20th Century, and enrolled in the Registry Books by Deed of Conveyance on 4 May 1921. Part of the New Burial Ground was consecrated on 5 November 1936 and there was a further consecration ceremony in 1979.

The newer part of the Cemetery is approximately four fifths of an acre, with around 720 ashes plots in the New Garden of Rest and 400 graves spaces.

War Graves - there are 30 on the war graves list.

You can view and search a digital map of the cemetery online by clicking on the button below. This will open a new window which gives you options to search for specific graves or individual burials by surname or date. You can also print an extract from the map to take with you and help you find a grave you wish to visit. All burials recorded in our registers are included but only some grave entries include a photo (we are still working on these).

Future Cemetery Provision - Update January 2026

Land next to Ringwood Cemetery at Hightown Road has long been set aside for future cemetery use and has, until recently, been used temporarily as allotments.
In 2020, the Town Council advised allotment holders that burial space within the existing cemetery was finite and that plans would be needed to meet future demand. Existing tenants were given priority for new allotments at the Crow Arch Lane site, and formal notice was issued last year confirming the end of allotment use on the remaining section.
A Cemetery Working Group has now been established to consider how the former allotment land could be developed into a modern cemetery facility.
This reflects changing approaches to funerals and remembrance, with many families seeking simpler, more affordable options and flexible ways to mark a loved one’s resting place.
As a result, modern cemetery design increasingly includes memorial gardens, scattering lawns and naturally landscaped areas alongside traditional burial spaces.
At present, work is focused on clearing and preparing the site.
Development is likely to take place in phases, allowing areas to be brought into use gradually and landscaped carefully, rather than the whole site being developed at once.
Once draft proposals are developed, a public consultation will take place so residents can view the plans, understand the options being considered, and share their views. Further updates will be provided as the project progresses.
