In January 2007, Ringwood became the first town in the New Forest to obtain Fairtrade accreditation. The project was initiated by students at Ringwood School, who worked with Councillors, business people and Churches Together to produce the evidence to meet the Fairtrade Foundation’s criteria.

In August 2013, the renewal of Accreditation was achieved following months of hard work by a group of dedicated volunteers led by Peter Brown and Vikki Jordan of the Ringwood branches of Waitrose and Sainsbury’s respectively. They were supported by a Steering Group made up of representatives of other traders in the town, the local churches and ordinary residents.

Importantly, they also had the full support of Ringwood School and its students, all of whom contributed massively to the preparation of the renewal submission and the achievement of re-accreditation. As required by the Fairtrade Foundation, the Town Council took a supporting, rather than a leading role, and has agreed to serve Fairtrade refreshments at its events.

“Fairtrade is a strategy for poverty alleviation and sustainable development. Its purpose is to create opportunities for producers and workers who have been economically disadvantaged or marginalized by the conventional trading system. If fair access to markets under better trade conditions would help them to overcome barriers to development, they can join Fairtrade.”

Fairtrade is a tool for development that ensures disadvantaged farmers and workers in developing countries get a better deal through the use of the international FAIRTRADE Mark.
