A £349,000 road improvement scheme to bring Southampton Road in Ringwood up to standard has been agreed by Hampshire County Council, as part of its capital programme for 2010.
The project has also benefited from a financial contribution from New Forest District Council and use of transport funding contributions from local development.
Better access from The Close and Furlong Car Park
To enable better access to the shops from The Close and the Furlong Car Park, a new layout will be constructed and an even level surface will be provided with no kerbs, in order to create a balance between pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
Paving materials and street furniture to be used have been selected to slow vehicle movement in the space. Additionally, a restricted zone to control parking will be introduced. This has been designed to allow events to be held with temporary road closures.
New lights, crossings, street furniture and planting
In the interests of developing a more attractive environment with improved safety and security, new lighting, pedestrian signs, street furniture and planting will be included in the scheme.
Furthermore the existing Puffin crossing on Mansfield Road will be upgraded to a Toucan. This will benefit a shared use cycle link from Southampton Road to The Close.
Councillor Kendal commented In approving the scheme on behalf of the County Council Councillor Mel Kendal, Executive Member for Environment, said:
“Recent years have seen improvements to Ringwood High Street, The Market Place and parts of Meeting House Lane as well as the development of Waitrose and associated shops in the Furlong updating, now it is Southampton Road’s turn. This scheme will help to improve the economic health of the town by improving access and encouraging shoppers into the street.”
