Veterans’ Day

Councillor Brian Terry, Mayor of Ringwood, Town Council will formally open the Veterans Day Celebrations at 11.00 am on Saturday 28th June 2008 at the town’s own museum of recent British history, the Ringwood Town and Country Experience.

‘It is a privilege for me to be invited to open this event, says Councillor Brian Terry, I grew up in England’s industrial heartland of the Midlands.

That area manufactured many of the planes, vehicles and munitions that helped this country come through the second world war.  This event celebrates the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the Royal Air Force and the 100th anniversary of the creation of the Territorial Army.

It also specifically celebrates the bravery of all members of those, and other armed forces, involved in safeguarding the freedom of all people in this country and in particular those who gave their lives to ensure our freedom.

It is fitting that this celebration is taking place at a museum dedicated to 20th Century British history and that our own MP, Desmond Swayne is a member of the Territorial Army and lives just down the road.’

The museum holds displays of vehicles and wartime memorabilia including a prototype ‘bouncing bomb’ developed by Barnes Wallis and used by the Dam Busters.  Some of the vehicles on display are owned by famous household names.

Entertainment outside the museum will include a Spider Man display at 3.00pm, a rope climbing gantry, bouncy castle and live music and refreshments.

After the official opening the museum will be open for normal admission.
