New Forest District Council has unveiled proposals for a new gym, especially equipped for youngsters, the elderly and the disabled at its Health and Leisure Centre in Ringwood.
The gym – which will boost the council’s Club 816 fitness scheme for youngsters – is part of NFDC’s continuing commitment to improve the fitness and lifestyles of its residents – especially younger and older people.
Assistant Director of Leisure Services, Bob Millard said: “Recent figures indicate that one in 10 six-year-olds are already obese and 80% of them will become overweight or obese adults. If current trends continue this could result in half of children in England being obese by 2020.
“The 816 projects that we run have received great local support and we are positive that this initiative will be just as successful. We are sure local residents will support our drive to improve the lifestyle choices for our children - and other groups - to keep them as fit as we possibly can.”
NFDC is planning to put the gym in the space currently used as a squash court at the Ringwood Health and Leisure Centre. The proposal is under consultation, and the council is keen for input from local residents, especially regular health and leisure centre users.
Photographs are on display in Ringwood Health and Leisure Centre’s reception foyer, and customers are invited to a meeting at the centre on Wednesday, January 23, at 8pm, to discuss the proposals.
