With Wimbledon around the corner and the removal of the former Tennis Club’s exclusive use arrangements for the grass tennis courts at Carvers Recreation Ground, every member of the public in the town can now emulate their heroes on grass courts.

“At £6 per hour to be shared between up to four people, the hiring of these grass courts represents tremendous value for money for anyone who wants to play tennis on grass”, said Cllr Malcolm Daly, Chairman of the Town Council’s Recreation Committee.

“The high cost of maintenance of grass courts and the need to close them as soon as there is any rain makes public grass courts a rarity” he continued.  “But this summer we will be able to see whether or not the public prefer to move forward with the times onto new synthetic surfaces or whether there is truly a demand for the good old fashioned grass courts”.

The courts can be booked at Ringwood Health & Leisure Centre, telephone 01425 478813 or by turning up and making an instant booking.

Rosie Bascombe, the Centre’s Co-ordinator of the initiative welcomed the Town Council’s decision to transfer letting of both the grass and hard courts at Carvers Recreation Ground to the Health & Leisure Centre, and emphasised the Centre’s commitment to the sport by confirming that it was intending to reintroduce professional tennis coaching at the Centre as quickly as possible.  Because of the variable bounce on grass courts, the professional coaching would be undertaken on the hard courts.
