Police across Western Hampshire are warning residents to be vigilant after more than ten homes were targeted by bogus callers yesterday, Thursday, January 11.
The distraction burglaries targeted mainly elderly residents from Ringwood in the west to Andover in the north.
In Hightown, Ringwood, an 86-year-old man and a 92-year-old woman lost more than £400 when a man entered their property while they were watching television between 6.30 and 7pm.
He said he was a Community Liaison Officer and had two detained men outside who were in possession of a large sum of cash. He then asked them to check their money to ensure it was still in the house.
The man then took the couple to the rear of premises to allegedly check household security. He then made a call on his mobile phone and left. Soon afterwards the couple discovered all their money had been stolen.
They described their bogus caller as:
- White
- Aged 18-22 years old
- 5ft 5ins to 5ft 9ins tall
- Well built
- Short, tidy dark hair
- Clean shaven
- He is described as casual but smart and was wearing white canvas shoes, dark coloured trousers and a dark mac style coat or anorak. He was quite well spoken with a local accent.
Investigating officer, DC Beth Morgan-Elliott said: “The victims of this crime are both elderly and have fallen for a very confident, very well planned attack. Due to this confidence, it is important that we identify and trace those responsible as soon as possible to prevent more vulnerable or elderly people becoming victims.”
Anyone who is able to assist police with their enquiries should phone their local police station on 0845 045 45 45 and quote Operation Liberal, or the anonymous Crimestoppers line 0800 555 111.
