‘Well done Ringwood’ says Town Mayor, Councillor Danny Cracknell, after receiving confirmation that the town had been awarded Fairtrade status with effect from 20 January by the National Fairtrade Organisation.
‘I think we are the first in the New Forest to achieve the status and one of only three actually seeking to gain accreditation. This is the culmination of over a year’s partnership working between the Council, Ringwood School, Churches Together and local traders.’
A Fairtrade scheme had first been brought to the attention of the Town Council by the students of the school and the Town Council was delighted to support their initiative to drive this forward.
‘The students should take a lot of credit in achieving this status and it is another example of the Town Council working with the community lending its support and expertise to the energies and initiatives of people, and this time young people, in the town’ added Councillor Danny Cracknell.
The Working Party established by the Town Council to achieve this award will continue. It will be responsible for ensuring that the directory of organisations using or selling Fairtrade products is prepared and published on the Town Council’s and other websites as appropriate. It will also be responsible for issuing further publicity material and encouraging use of Fairtrade products.
Any persons interested in being involved in the project, either through its promotion or as a user or supplier of Fairtrade products, are invited to make direct contact with the Council by telephoning 01425 473883 or by email to town.council@ringwood.gov.uk.
