Road Signage
Alice: oh, no, no.  I was just wondering if you could help me find my way.
Cheshire Cat: Well that depends on where you want to get to.
Alice: Oh, it really doesn’t matter, as long as…
Cheshire Cat: Then it really doesn’t matter which way you go.

‘Well actually it does matter’ says Councillor Brian Terry after Ringwood Town Council’s Town Plan Partnership Steering Group approved recommendations to carry out a full scale review of directional and other signage in the town centre.

Councillor Terry added ‘the Town Council is not responsible for signage in the town since signage is a function of the County and District Councils.

But at the Annual Assembly, the Town Council had undertaken to do everything it could to facilitate arrangements to address concerns that have been raised by visitors, residents and importantly the local traders about the lack of directional signs within the town centre.’

The Town Plan Partnership Steering Group has invited local resident Mr Roger Bettle to lead a project group to review deficiencies in signage in the town and to come up with proposals for improvements with full details of the signs proposed, their costs and possible funding arrangements.

Jo Stannard, the Council’s Deputy Town Clerk, will support Roger and the Chamber of Trade has agreed to nominate representatives to the group.

However, the Town Council is very anxious to involve the general public in the review and Councillor Terry has urged anyone who has an interest in directional signage in the town to contact Jo Stannard on 01425 473883 and to take part in the group’s discussions and formulation of proposals.

‘This is likely to be one of the first visible results arising from the Healthcheck which the Town Council is undertaking’ said Councillor Terry ‘and it is very important for as many members of the public to contribute to this debate so that the results command support from all sectors of the community.

Anyone interested should therefore make contact with the Town Council as early as possible.’
