Anyone who wants to get fitter and healthier this summer has no excuse.

All six council-run health and leisure centres are signed up to the national Commit to Get Fit campaign and are offering five weeks’ trial membership for only £45.

The trial membership can start any time between July 3rd and August 13th and includes entry to the gym, a free induction session, and free entry to many aerobics classes and public swimming sessions.

The five centres are also signed up to a summer of fun with many additional activities and events taking place over the next two months to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, this year’s nominated charity for Commit to Get Fit.

Commit to Get Fit has been running for 14 years and is supported by approved health and fitness centres all over the country.

The campaign offers discounted rates on memberships and advice and activities designed to encourage people to take on more healthy lifestyles. It has helped over 1.5 million people get fitter so far.

Some of the special fitness and charity fundraising activities planned for this summer include a 12 hour studio cycling extravaganza at Totton Health and Leisure Centre on Tuesday August 1, as well as a step, cardio kick and core body conditioning session and an Ascot-style fancy hat aqua session at Totton on the same day.

New Milton health and leisure is also planning a studio cycling session on July 29 and details of other events at all the centres are being finalised.

“Regular physical exercise is essential for a healthy, happy life,” said NFDC’s portfolio holder for leisure, Cllr Barry Rickman.

“Any form of regular sustained activity can help you reduce your risk of premature death by almost 40 per cent and helps to protect you from some diseases. It also makes you feel happier and less stressed because of the release of endorphins into your body.

“I would encourage as many people as possible to take part in this year’s Commit to Get Fit campaign and to take advantage of this fabulous special offer at our health and leisure centres.”

Details of activities taking place at all the health and leisure centres will be updated regularly on the website at Health and Leisure Centres across the New Forest.
